Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It

Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It

"No matter how hard I try to ditch your touch, when you're away too long… it's too much," Raphael Saadiq sings to his girl. But for me, he might as well have been talking about my nostalgia. At barely 28, I suppose I can't really be nostalgic for that Motown sound, unless you consider my nostalgia borrowed or inspired or something. Whatever the craving should be called, I get my fix with tracks like "100 Yard Dash," "Staying in Love," and "Never Give You Up." It seems a little unfair that Smokey had The Miracles and that The Blue Notes had Teddy but that Raphael is out on his own. Don't misread that; Raphael is not Smokey Robinson or Teddy Pendergrass. But if there's going to be a soul revival, it'd be great if there was a conductor and a band bringing up the rear, because while some of "The Way I See It" is easily identifiable as imitation (like parts of "Calling" and the "Oh Girl" remix), there's a lot more that sounds like the real thing.
