Sleigh Bells - Treats

Might as well just get this out of the way: I have no idea what this record is about. But I don't care, because I can't stop listening to it.

It's an awesome wall of sound. Not the kind of wall Public Enemy famously built out of layers upon layers of samples. But, still, a block of noise that hits you square in the face (and then probably mocks you if that makes you cry / calls you a "punk" for not getting it).

For instance, "Tell 'Em:" the instrumental is like some tricked out laser tag battle. But deciphering the lyrics? Your guess is probably better than mine. But if the point is "what is wrong with kids these days?" it sounds so much better than any rant from Mr. Wilson about Dennis. I'd like to take this moment to dedicate this to DC's bratty tweenage class.

Or take "Kids." The guttural, throaty sounds at the start (which reappear at the start of "Rachel") feel disconnected from the track and its title. They make you think you're getting prepped for something dangerously romantic, and then the front gives you really light lines about what sounds like an average day at the beach (doesn't even dress it up with Annette Funicello-like glee over an imagined Frankie Avalon).

But if you listen to anything on this record, check out "Infinity Guitars" and "Rill Rill." In the latter, check out her delivery of "Click, click, settle up" and be impressed by the subtle but driving movement of the melody.
